OK, I do that myself, I just don't think about it in it case I guess. I think that thisis because there is nothing about it that does not just bug me.

Hit search, for instance, in synaptic and instead of just the little spinny thingy (I like technical terms) I get the screen dimming. What is the point?

Lol no point.Compiz was just an example, but as you can see I have an error...no xgl.A lot of apps require xgl for instance xbmc does, and some photo/graphics editing apps...but I use neither on my lappy,so I don't care if I have it or not.

your good to go...if nothing else with the correct driver you should see some speed with graphic intense apps.

O yah...If you plan on running mythtv(I remember you mentioning it) you will have to edit the xorg. in order for it to work.

Myth will be a while. I need to build a box for it. I think I will go with a cpu along the line of what I have (core2quad) but not any ATI card, bigger power unit, and if I can I want more cpi slots and internal drive bays.

A larger case and intake and output fans will also be there.

I want a real box that I can really use.

All benchmarks that I have seen seem to give the best speeds to the vesa drivers. I really do not see any real improvement with this driver at all. I reset the effects to none and, I think, things just work better. No stupid wobbly windows for one thing.

That just tells ya how far the open source drivers has come ;)

And there is one difference on your system...you have effects now(whether you use em or not) that tells me the proprietary driver has something the open source driver does not have....not beating the open source driver at all.I think they work great.

About myth...myth is quite a few years old now.People had perfectly working boxes on what we call obsolete hardware now,and still do...unless of course you want to watch hd stuff.

I am using the Ubuntu supplied proprietary under kinky. I have a lot of flickering on the screen in the GDM and at some other times. This may straighten out. It works better than I expected.

I use it on 1 32bit and 164bit install and I would say that it is about as good as what I have here. It is hard to judge performance of an alpha against a stable release.

HD is needed. I don't watch much TV. Karen does that for me. I want to play with the box and feed the house. I want ALL the toys.

Kinda late.....

Stoner you have to run

Code: Select all
    aticonfig --initial

so it will write the xorg.config file.

there maybe an -f at the end of that command too.I'm having a hard time remembering.
